About the Sinkankas Symposium

The Sinkankas Symposium has been described as the most important gemological conferences in North America by respected authorities on gemstones. The annual event is named for John Sinkankas (1915–2002), one of the most distinguished and influential figures in gemology and mineralogy. Every year, presentations on a featured gem theme or gem-producing region are given by specialists in their fields.

Organized by Roger Merk for 13 years (2003–2015), the Sinkankas Symposium is co-sponsored by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and Geo-Literary Society, with generous support from Bill Larson since the event’s inception. GIA has hosted the in-person symposia since the beginning at its Worldwide Headquarters and Robert Mouawad Campus in Carlsbad, California.

Twentieth Sinkankas Symposium – Gems & Minerals of Burma (Myanmar)

The one-day event was held at GIA’s World Headquarters in Carlsbad, California on April 25, 2026. It featured 10 speakers on topics related to one of the most storied gem-producing regions of the world. Specialists noted in their fields discussed geology, field gemology, geochemical characterization of sapphires, inclusion features in Burmese gems, modern mining and production, market reports, jade nomenclature, history of jadeite, pearls, and the quest for Burma's finest and rarest gems. This year's event and proceedings were dedicated to Professor George R. Rossman. Read a review of the event »
